Pokorski Motorsports bags top-10 at Outagamie, encounters bad luck at Plymouth

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) July 16, 2019 – Paul Pokorski and his Pokorski Motorsports team experienced a Midwest Sprint Car Association doubleheader weekend of racing action that provided a little of bit of everything, including a solid A-main finish, a tribute to a fallen team supporter, assorted mechanical gremlins, a race run in honor of a late fellow racer and a disappointing on-track incident to spoil a potentially strong run, Friday, July 12 at Outagamie Speedway Powered by EWSC Racing in Seymour Wis. and Saturday, July 13 at The Plymouth Dirt Track at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth, Wis.

On Friday, July 12, Pokorski ventured to one of his favorite tracks on the MSA schedule, Outagamie Speedway Powered By EWSC Racing in Seymour, where 31 360 Sprint Cars signed in to do battle.

After lining up seventh in the third MSA heat race, Pokorski worked past rookie Blake Wondra on the opening lap before maneuvering around Bill Taylor on lap six to secure a fifth-place finish and a berth in the 25-lap A main.

The 2014 MSA Masters Series champion rolled off from the 13th starting spot in the A main and worked past two cars in the early going to move into 11th when the lone caution flag of the race appeared on lap eight for Anthony Knierim’s stalled machine in turn one.

Following the restart, Pokorski held strong to power past Bill Taylor into 10th place on lap 15. Three laps later, Will Gerrits moved past to relegate Pokorski to 11th. However, Pokorski rode the outside groove of the wide, smooth and slick third-mile track to pass Lance Fassbender in turn four to regain the 10th spot.

Pokorski maintained the 10th spot in the closing laps to notch his seventh top-10 A-main showing of the 2019 season in a race won by Travis Arenz.

“Friday night was pretty good, but not without a few minor struggles,” Pokorski said. “The car didn’t run in hot laps. We found a broken spark plug wire and switched that for the heat race. While we were doing that, we ran the wing back to get it out of the way. However, I forgot to run it back forward for the heat race. Driver error there probably cost of a spot or two in the heat race.

“In the A main, I thought the track was fun and very racy,” he said. “The top and bottom were very equal and a few people even made it work through the middle. I hope the fans at Seymour enjoyed the show. We would certainly like to go back there more often next year.”

During the National Anthem parade lap at Outagamie Speedway on Friday night, Pokorski carried the black flag on the track in honor of MSA and Pokorski Motorsports supporter Dave “Hagar” Nelson, who passed away on July 5.

With 36 PDTR 360 Sprint Cars signed in for the Remembering Randy Tracy Mid-Season Championship program Saturday, July 13 at The Plymouth Dirt Track, Pokorski started and finished second in the first heat race to qualify for the extended 30-lap main event.

After starting 10th, Pokorski dropped back to 13th on lap 4 before finding a groove to his liking near the cushion on lap 6. Pokorski vaulted into the top 10 on lap 7. However, disaster struck on lap 8 when he was involved in a three-car incident between turns one and two, which resulted in contact with Shane Wenninger and Anthony Knierim. The damage from the incident was determined to be too extensive to continue. As a result, Pokorski was scored 21st in the race, which was won by Josh Walter.

“Saturday night was going very well until a little mishap in turn one of the A main,” Pokorski said. “We had learned a few things on Friday night and tweaked the car a bit for Saturday. It was probably the best race car we’ve had in a very, very long time. I was extremely disappointed and frustrated that we didn’t get to finish that race off the right way. Racing can be a very humbling sport to say the least. Sometimes I have to remind myself that if it was easy, everyone would do it.”

Pokorski was included in a special pre-race ceremony at Plymouth recognizing the racing career of the late Randy Tracy, who raced at Plymouth for 24 years from 1973 to 1996. Pokorski competed against Tracy in the Winged Super Modified division at Plymouth from 1993 to 1996.

The Pokorski Motorsports will compete in another MSA doubleheader weekend starting this Saturday, July 20 at The Plymouth Dirt Track at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth, Wis. for autograph night sponsored by Pokorski Motorsports supporter Hopf Farms, which will provide backpacks and checkered flags for kids. Hot laps start at 5:30 p.m. with racing at 6 p.m.

On Sunday, July 21, the team will return to Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, Wis. for the second of three scheduled MSA events at the track this season. Hot laps are slated for 5:30 p.m. with racing to follow.

“We will work hard to get the car right for this weekend’s races at Plymouth and Angell Park and keep on digging,” Pokorski said.
